August Newsletter
Hello from Los Angeles! I just returned from spending two months in Asia visiting Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea. I’m in Southern California for the long weekend then heading back to PV for less than 24 hours before a week of press trips in Europe. More on my travels in the last section of the newsletter!
✨Book me for Hispanic/Latinx/e Heritage Month✨
Every year LHM is celebrated from September 15th - October 15th. As an Uruguayan-American journalist, I can speak to an array of topics related to the Latinx experience. I’ve covered our communities extensively as a journalist for InStyle, HuffPost, Oprah Magazine, Women’s Health, Good Housekeeping, Bustle, AARP, Insider, Parade, Reader’s Digest, Refinery29, Well + Good, Remezcla, and more. https://lolaannmendez.com/latine/
I’ve already been hired as a keynote speaker for one LHM event this year. I’m available for virtual and in-person speaking engagements, TV appearances, panel moderation, brand collaborations, consultations, podcast chats, hosting events, creating internal and external documents, blog posts, journalism, assignments, etc.
Thank you for subscribing to my monthly newsletter that highlights my recently published articles, upcoming calls for sources, and a peek into my travels. If you’d like to support my work, tips are appreciated via Venmo, CashApp, and PayPal. Alternatively, you can subscribe to the paid version of this newsletter for $9.99 a month. If you’d like, buy me a tea here as a token of appreciation.
If you’d like to work with me, I offer consultations where I workshop pitches and allow writers to pick my brain about the industry: LolaAnnMendez.com/Consultation
In August, I wrote eight articles—all were pitches commissioned by my editors. I wrote about 4,000 words.
I sent 35 pitches this month—none were commissioned, five are being considered, four were rejected, and 26 are pending a response.
My portfolio can be viewed at any time at LolaAnnMendez.com. In August, I had two articles published. I have upcoming pieces in new-to-me publications including Travel+Leisure India & South Asia, Wanderlust, Wussy, Naïra, ANKHA, and Adventure.
I always post my calls for sources on Twitter.com/LolaAnnaMendez. Newsletter subscribers are privy to the first look at my current work. PR folks (and individuals, when relevant) are welcome to send pitches for the stories on which I’m currently working.
For PR folks looking to connect with writers, I recommend the PressHook online platform.
As of now, for September, I’m working on the following articles but I’m not looking for sources:
Top 5 Vegan Cities in Europe
Meet the influencer who's putting 'gaycations' on the map
A feature on a Latina public affairs director
I spent all of August traveling around Asia. Once we got out of Japan (which is easily one of my top 10 favorite countries) we visited Taiwan where I enjoyed the delicious vegan food (so many mushrooms), unique sites (massive Buddha statues and technicolored mural villages), and beautiful beaches. Our time in South Korea was split between Seoul and Busan which are both fascinating cities that have everything to offer, but mostly, I fell in love with jjimjilbangs and, went to three in less than two weeks, and spent way too much money on K beauty products, but now my skin is glowing, so worth it. The trip ended where it started, in Tokyo, where my days were focused on eating and relaxing before heading back to the Americas.
This week I’ll be in Japan, USA, Mexico, and France—and Spain come September 9th. More about those travels—and a new-to-me country I’m visiting on vacation —in next month's newsletter.
