March Newsletter
Hola desde Puerto Vallarta, Mexico! I’ve been back in my homebase for three weeks which is the longest stretch I’ve spent in my apartment this year.
I’m honored to share that Travel + Leisure published a feature about my work and me as a part of their ‘Women On The March’ series for International Women's Month.
Thank you for subscribing to my monthly newsletter that highlights my recently published articles, upcoming calls for sources, and a peek into my travels. If you want to support my work, tips are appreciated via Venmo, CashApp, and PayPal. Alternatively, you can subscribe to the paid version of this newsletter for $9.99 a month.
If you’d like to work with me, I offer consultations where I workshop pitches and allow writers to pick my brain about the industry: LolaAnnMendez.com/Consultation
I filed 7 articles (about 6,900 words). Three were assignments (editors contacted me to write the story). The other 9 articles were commissioned pitches (editors bought the article ideas I sent them). I sent 17 pitches this month—one was commissioned, one was rejected, and 15 are pending a response.
My portfolio can be viewed any time at LolaAnnMendez.com. In March, I had 12 articles published. Each image is clickable so you can read the story. This month I debuted in The Times and Broccoli Magazine. I have upcoming pieces in new-to-me publications including Wine Enthusiast, Experience Life, Scott’s Cheap Flights, Bon Appetit, and Wix.
I always post my calls for sources on Twitter.com/LolaAnnaMendez. Newsletter subscribers get a first look at what I’m working on. PR folks and individual people (when relevant) are welcome to send pitches for the stories for which I’m currently working.
So far for April, I'm not looking for any sources.
I spent the beginning of March in Torres del Paine National Park in Chile where I saw eight wild pumas, including three babies. I returned to Mexico and went to Playa del Carmen to review a luxurious resort with my sister in tow who was visiting Mexico for the first time. I’ve been in PV for three weeks working on reporting a guide to the city. We saw humpback whales, green macaws, and had adventures we’ll remember for a lifetime.
I have a week left here in PV before I go on my first vacation in ages. I’m heading to Turkey and Egypt on my own dime and not for work, but you know I’ll probably end up finding fascinating stories to write. Then May will be another jam-packed month! I’ll tell you about it in the next newsletter.
