May Newsletter
Halló from Iceland, my 70th country to visit! To celebrate International Pride Month, I finally added a section to my portfolio dedicated to my LGBTQ+ articles. You can now also find sections for all of my articles about tattoos, yoga, cannabis, and sexual assault. I feel lucky to be able to write about a wide range of my passions.
Thank you for subscribing to my monthly newsletter that highlights my recently published articles, upcoming calls for sources, and a peek into my travels. If you want to support my work, tips are appreciated via Venmo, CashApp, and PayPal. Alternatively, you can subscribe to the paid version of this newsletter for $9.99 a month.
If you’d like to work with me, I offer consultations where I workshop pitches and allow writers to pick my brain about the industry: LolaAnnMendez.com/Consultation
I filed seven articles, writing about 5,800 words. Of the articles, three were assignments (editors contacted me to write the story). The other four articles were commissioned pitches (editors bought the article ideas I sent them). I sent 39 pitches this month—three were commissioned, 14 were rejected, and 22 are pending a response.
My portfolio can be viewed any time at LolaAnnMendez.com. In May, I had five articles published. I have upcoming pieces in new-to-me publications including The Washington Post, The Today Show, Experience Life, and Scott’s Cheap Flights.

I always post my calls for sources on Twitter.com/LolaAnnaMendez. Newsletter subscribers get a first look at what I’m working on. PR folks (and individuals when relevant) are welcome to send pitches for the stories for which I’m currently working.
So far for April, I'm looking for PR pitches for the below stories:
- Top LGBTQ+ friendly cities
- How to find non-judgmental abortion support
In May I returned to one of my favorite LATAM capital cities, Lima, to stay at the city’s first plastic-free hotel and I learned that there are 300 pyramids in Peru’s capital city. I was back in PV for a day before I headed out to Victoria, Canada for the IMPACT sustainable tourism conference. Sadly mask mandates dropped and although I’m quadruple vaccinated and wore an N95 I got COVID-19 for the first time and had to miss a press trip to Alaska. Once I tested negative I was able to go back to PV where I spent 10 days recovering and then celebrating PV Pride.
I’m on the road for 5.5 weeks right now. In a few days, I’m off to Riga, Tallin, Helsinki, and Madrid for personal travels before I head to Uruguay to see family and then hit NYC.
