September Newsletter
Hola from somewhere over the clouds! I’m en route from NYC to Jordan.
This month something wild happened—I went viral on Twitter. The tweet that has over 96,000 likes is about a topic that’s very important to me, the Latina Pay Gap. Read through my thread or this IG post to learn about what that means.
Thank you for subscribing to my monthly newsletter that highlights my recently published articles, upcoming calls for sources, and a peek into my travels. If you want to support my work, tips are appreciated via Venmo, CashApp, and PayPal. Alternatively, you can subscribe to the paid version of this newsletter for $9.99 a month. You can also buy me a tea as a token of appreciation here.
If you’d like to work with me, I offer consultations where I workshop pitches and allow writers to pick my brain about the industry: LolaAnnMendez.com/Consultation
In September, I filed nine articles, writing about 6,800 words. Of the articles I wrote this month, eight were assignments (editors contacted me to write the story). The other piece was commissioned (editors bought the article ideas I sent them). I sent 51 pitches this month—six were commissioned, two are being considered, 11 were rejected, and 32 are pending a response.
My portfolio can be viewed at any time at LolaAnnMendez.com. In September, I had 10 articles published and I made my debut in AARP, Good Housekeeping, and Women’s Health. I have upcoming pieces in new-to-me publications including The Today Show, The Zoe Report, Ensemble Vacation Magazine, Experience Life, The Compass, and Sliced.

I always post my calls for sources on Twitter.com/LolaAnnaMendez. Newsletter subscribers are privy to the first look at my current work. PR folks (and individuals when relevant) are welcome to send pitches for the stories on which I’m currently working.
So far this month I'm looking for PR pitches for the below stories:
- Sustainable tourism in Torres del Paine, Patagonia, Chile
I spent most of September in Puerto Vallarta, MX. It was nice to be at ‘home’ for 3.5 weeks and have my cousin visit me. It was not so nice to be in four huge back-to-back earthquakes including a 7.7. A category 4 hurricane is expected to hit PV tonight too.
But, I’m not there right now. I just spent a week stateside between NYC and Salem. I bought tickets for the Vegandale vegan food festival before I even knew if I’d be in NYC last weekend, but everything worked out. Salem was a blast—I learned so much about witches and surrendered myself to gimmicky tourism and even dressed up as a witch!
Today, I’m en route to Jordan where after years of relationship building I will finally be a guest on an Intrepid tour. On my 33rd birthday, I’ll be in Petra and will only have one New Wonder of the World left to reach—The Great Wall of China. Maybe in 2023?
I’m heading off on a special trip for Dia de Los Muertos in Mexico that I’ll share with you in next month’s newsletter.
