September Newsletter
Hola desde Puerto Vallarta, Mexico! I’ve been back for just over two weeks after a week in southern Europe. More on my travels in the last section of the newsletter!
✨Book me for Hispanic/Latinx/e Heritage Month✨
There are still two weeks of LHM left this year. As a Uruguayan-American journalist, I can speak to an array of topics related to the Latinx experience. I’ve covered our communities extensively as a journalist for InStyle, HuffPost, Oprah Magazine, Women’s Health, Good Housekeeping, Bustle, AARP, Insider, Parade, Reader’s Digest, Refinery29, Well + Good, Remezcla, and more. https://lolaannmendez.com/latine/
This week I was a keynote speaker for a conference discussing the demographic terms used to describe people with Latin American heritage, and I’ve also written an article for The Zoe Report about why gold hoop earrings are historically part of Latinx identity. I also profiled the youngest person to ever serve as a Director for the Pentagon—and yes, she’s Latina!
I’m available for virtual and in-person speaking engagements, TV appearances, panel moderation, brand collaborations, consultations, chats on podcasts, hosting events, creating internal and external documents, blog posts, journalism, assignments, etc.
Thank you for subscribing to my monthly newsletter that highlights my recently published articles, upcoming calls for sources, and a peek into my travels. If you’d like to support my work, tips are appreciated via Venmo, CashApp, and PayPal. Alternatively, you can subscribe to the paid version of this newsletter for $9.99 a month. If you’d like, buy me a tea here as a token of appreciation.
If you’d like to work with me, I offer consultations where I workshop pitches and allow writers to pick my brain about the industry: LolaAnnMendez.com/Consultation
In September, I wrote seven articles—five were assignments from editors and two were pitches commissioned by my editors. I wrote about 4,700 words.
I sent 27 pitches this month—none were commissioned, three are being considered, five were rejected, and 19 are pending a response.
My portfolio can be viewed at any time at LolaAnnMendez.com. In September, I had 10 articles published including my debut in Travel+Leisure India & South Asia and Naïra. I have upcoming pieces in new-to-me publications including Wanderlust, Wussy, Xtra, and Adventure.
I always post my calls for sources on Twitter.com/LolaAnnaMendez. Newsletter subscribers are privy to the first look at my current work. PR folks (and individuals, when relevant) are welcome to send pitches for the stories on which I’m currently working.
For PR folks looking to connect with writers, I recommend the PressHook online platform.
As of now, for October, I’m working on the following articles but I’m not looking for sources:
How to Empower the Trans Community to Diagnose Breast Cancer Earlier and Reduce Recurrence Rates
This is the rarest passport in the world
Boston's Mushroom Boutique
After returning from Asia and Los Angeles, I was only home for one night before I headed to Europe for two spirits-centric press trips. I visited a lovely winery in the south of France and spent a few days in Andalusia, Spain with Macallan learning about Sherry. Ever since I returned to Mexico, I’ve been enjoying weekend jaunts visiting friends in to new-to-me destinations in Mexico including a weekend in Ensenada and last weekend in Navidad, a tiny mountain pueblo in Jalisco.
Tomorrow I’m off on a 12-day hybrid personal/press trip to see family in New Mexico and finally attend the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque. If weather allows, this will be my 5th hot air balloon ride—I’m so stoked. Later this month I’ll be headed to Oaxaca City with my Mexican friends to celebrate Dia de Los Muertos. More about those travels in next month's newsletter.
